THE PRODUCT PROBLEM

Users were experiencing limitations with the existing JavaScript runtime, Bun, due to its foundation in Zig, which was not meeting performance and scalability expectations. The competitive pressure came from emerging coding models and runtimes that were outpacing Bun's capabilities, necessitating a swift and efficient transition to a more robust language like Rust.
THE DECISION
The decision to invest $165K in migrating Bun from Zig to Rust using Anthropic's Fable, despite the high upfront cost, was a strategic tradeoff. The gain was a dramatically shortened migration timeline, allowing the team to reallocate resources to other critical areas of development and innovation. This decision required alignment across product management, engineering, and operations, as it involved balancing budget constraints with the need for rapid technological advancement. The alignment was challenging due to initial skepticism about the cost and feasibility of such a rapid transition. In hindsight, the decision proved correct as it enabled Bun to quickly enhance its performance and competitiveness.
THE LESSON
This case highlights the importance of PM/eng collaboration in leveraging cutting-edge tools to solve complex problems. It reveals that sometimes, investing significantly in a high-risk, high-reward strategy can pay off if the alignment across teams is strong and the execution is flawless. A PM advice blog might not emphasize the value of taking such calculated risks, but this example shows that when engineering presents a bold solution, PMs should be open to exploring it, especially when it aligns with the broader strategic goals. This collaboration can lead to breakthroughs that redefine timelines and set new standards in the industry.
