THE PRODUCT PROBLEM

At Duolingo, the challenge was to enhance language learners' ability to write in a new language, a skill crucial for real-world communication and memory reinforcement. Users needed a way to seamlessly integrate writing with other language skills like reading, listening, and speaking. The existing approach lacked a structured method to build writing proficiency from basic to advanced levels, leaving learners struggling to express themselves fully. Competitively, Duolingo had to differentiate itself by offering a comprehensive language learning experience that included writing, a feature not adequately addressed by other language apps.

THE DECISION

The team decided to integrate writing exercises throughout the learning process, starting from basic word recognition to crafting full sentences. This approach required close alignment between product managers, engineers, and content creators to ensure that writing exercises were effectively scaffolded. The decision meant investing in developing new features like word banks, stories, and flashcards, while potentially delaying other feature enhancements. This alignment was challenging as it required balancing the technical feasibility with educational efficacy, but it ultimately enriched the user experience by making writing practice an integral part of language learning.

THE LESSON

This initiative highlights the importance of cross-functional collaboration in creating a holistic product experience. While PMs often focus on user outcomes, engineers and content creators bring the technical and educational perspectives necessary to realize those outcomes. The process demonstrated that effective product development requires not just alignment on goals but also a shared understanding of how different elements of the product can work together to enhance user learning. This case shows that successful PM/eng collaboration involves not only aligning on what to build but also on how each feature interconnects to support broader learning objectives.
